I'm not sure I have the same unit but I have a couple Waveshare TFT displays. I had no end of trouble getting them to work on Bookworm. I finally ended up with:
dtoverlay=piscreen,drm
and that's it. X11 too, I couldn't get Wayland to work. The touch screen is still messed up but I can live with that in my application. They definitely worked better on Bullseye.
I'm using mine for temperature display and a UTC clock.
