Tried a lot of things and nothing worked:
- tried two other cables (cable not the problem)
- tried another sound meter (identical) known working (device not the problem)
- tried using wifi instead of ethernet b/c perhaps the shielding on the ethernet connector was bringing interference to the circuit (since it's near the usb ports), problem remained without ethernet plugged in
- tried removing fan, no luck.
- tried all other usb ports (usb2 and 3), no luck.
- tried another SD card from a known working pi4 running the same sound meter script over usb - same issue.
Everything I tried, I still got timeouts and eventually "no device" error within 10 seconds of running the script.
I can only come to the conclusion that the Pi5 board itself is faulty
