Troubleshooting • Upgrading from 3B+ to 4 or 5

My loyal 3B+ has (probably) passed away, presumably from old age and constant use--it's my dhcp and dns server. I'm currently trying the "leave it alone and unplugged for 24 hours and, in the interim, have moved the sd card over to a model 4 where it's working just fine.

The OS was a clean install of the Raspberry Pi OS 64 bit via the Raspberry Pi Imager, so was presumably optimized for the 3B+. As noted, it's working fine on the 4, but I have to wonder if there would be any performance gains by starting with a fresh Model 4-specific installation and then migrating configuration and data across.

Or, since I'd be throwing money at the problem anyway, if I were to pick up a Model 5, would I be better off starting fresh, etc, or could I just migrate the sd card to an ssd and call it a day?
