Troubleshooting • Pi5 - Wifi & torrents were working fine - now they're both broken

Hello,

I built my last windows PC around 2010. I used it as a media box. It was only ever hooked up to TV's, never sat in an office and was never hooked up to a traditional monitor.

Eventually the motherboard crapped out. I had everything backed up to external SSD's and still have the HDD's so nothing was lost, just an inconvenience.

Bought a Pi5 Canakit a few weeks ago. Figured the tiny size would work nicer than a tower for setting up next to a TV. The salesman and the packaging made it sound pretty simply to set it up as a media box like I used the old PC for.

Figured since I had a little linux experience in the past with a few different distros that I'd be ok on PiOS.

Well, to be honest it's been nothing but issues since I got it.

I'm trying to be patient and work through each issue but honestly right now I'm 50/50 on whether I should keep it or return it for a refund and buy a windows micro PC instead.

Like one day it booted up in 1024x768 resolution for no damn reason and I spent 3 hours trying to get it back to 4k output.....

Or I had to reboot three times and enter some command line codes to update the OS just to get it to read a thumb drive over 128gb.

Anyways, the two big issues I'm dealing with right now:

1. Wifi won't work.

2. Torrents wom't work even when wifi worked
.

#1 - no wifi

When I setup the Pi initially I used the pre loaded OS Micro SD that came with the canakit. I had no issues connecting to the first home network I tried (We have three different wifi networks in my house).

For the next week I had absolutely no issues with wifi or internet.

8 or 9 days into owning the Pi, it decided it didn't like my wifi network and disconnected itself from it. It has never connected to another wifi since.

I've tried:

-1. Resetting all routers and network equipment.
0. Rebooting
1. Disconnecting from all networks and then re-connecting.
2. Verifying the passwords of each network 3 times.
3. Connecting to the other two wifi networks in our house, and triple checking their passwords.
4. Deleting all wifi info and manually re-entering them one by one.
5. When all that failed I searched for previous topics with this issue. I found many topics here with this issue but none of them had any solutions. Just people asking OP to reboot to a stock PiOS image and post diagnostic info, but no solutions.

I'm completely at a loss.

Nothing changed with my networks. All other devices in the house, including windows laptops and towers, mac phones and tablets, gaming consoles and android phones and tablets, all connect without issue to any of our three networks.

I have repeatedly tried re-entering our network names and passwords. It will not connect to any of them. I have tried for hours with no results.

I also tried taking it to a friends house and connecting to their wifi. Same story.

What my Pi does is ask me for the password over and over on endless loop. I'll disable the netowkr connections, then re-enable them, then try connecting to any of my home networks. The network icon animates indication its trying to to its job, then 30-90 seconds later a password prompt comes up. The password is still entered in. If I hit enter or delete it and re-type it, same thing. It just pops back up again in about 90 seconds and asks for the password again. I have re-verified them over and over and I am absolutely 100% sure the passwords are correct.

#2 No torrents

When the internet was working fine on my Pi, I was using it to download torrents. I got to download two then I have never been able to launch any torrent program ever on my Pi since then.

It's really bizarre. I downloaded transmission through the add / remove programs launcher from the menu bar. I had used it in the past and liked it. It worked great right away. Perfect.

The third torrent I tried to download, nothing happened when I clicked the magnet link. Weird.

So I tried manually downloading the .torrent then launching it from my system. Nothing.

Ok. So I went in my browser and reset file type associations to make sure magnet links are to open with transmission. Still no go.

So I uninstall it, reboot, reinstall it, reboot, and try again. Nothing.

I can't even launch transmission at all. After a fresh install even. I cannot get any response out of my pie if I try to click a magnet link, launch a torrent file or launch transmission.

So I said f it and decided to try a different torrent app. Launched the add / remove software window, looked up bigly BT, downloaded and installed, and same damn thing.

The torrent app won't launch if I try to simply load it itself. it won't do anything if I click a magnet link after telling my browser to launch it. Nothing at all.

I tried a third one too, deluge. Same thing. Nothing happens if I try to launch it. Nothing happens if I tell my browser to launch megnet files with deluge, bigly bt or transmission.

--------------------------

So yeah. I registered here in hopes of getting some help. I don't mind some tinkering here and there.
but dang. going a full week without being able to launch ANY torrent program on my Pi is just bizarre. Now even if I get that working I can't connect to any wifi at all.

Thank you in advance for any help you can give me. I really want to make this cool device work as my media box. I'm thrilled not being on modern windows, it's a nightmare. But if I can't get very basic things like wifi and proper resolutions functioning I'm going to have to return it and figure out another solution. maybe dual booting ubuntu and windows on a minisforum, I dunno.

I hope this post gets approved soon and I can get a fix. I was so excited having a new media box instead of my options being watch something on my tiny phone or youtube on a playstation in 1080p with ads every ten seconds.
