I have a powered USB 3 hub connected to my Pi 5 8GB via the fixed cable on the hub plugged into one of the type A USB 3 ports.
I have just noticed that the fan continues to run when the power supply is unplugged from the USB C port. The fan will stop if I pull the connection to the hub.
This doesn't seem right to me. I wouldn't expect the hub to supply power via the data cable and I wouldn't expect the Pi to draw power through a data port.
It is an official 'Active Cooler for Raspberry Pi 5' plugged into the dedicated fan pins.
The hub has external SSDs and HDD connected to it.
The drives work slower than expected and the Pi runs hotter than expected. I hadn't bothered too much because while the drives are slow in tests they are working fine in normal use, it just means back ups take longer than they should and although the Pi runs hot in tests it is only about 50 in normal use.
But, now that I have discovered this, what seems to me to be strange, behaviour with power coming through a data port I thought that might be the cause of these shortcomings. The hub is an unbranded generic product bought through Amazon, so might be a piece of crap.
Any thoughts on this.
