Troubleshooting • Re: [rpi5] [AlpineLinux] How to force HDMI Console-Only Resolution?

Hi,

I can't help here but I do have the same HDMI problem with my RPi5 and I'm hoping someone here can provide some assistance. I only run in console mode. If the connected HDMI display is 1920x1080 the display is fine. But if I'm using any smaller display (e.g. 1600x1050, 1440x900, 1280x1024) the RPi5 defaults to 640x480 resolution. I've tried the suggestions above but none make any difference.

I've tried the standard 6.6.28 kernel in the latest downloadable release (Raspberry Pi OS with desktop) and the screen resolution does match the display even when I start this release in multi-user mode rather than graphical mode. But if I try this kernel in my bullseye system the resolution problem occurs. It appears the kernel assumes the resolution listed in the kernel command line is correct (this is always 640x480 or 1920x1080) and no further checking is done unless there is something (perhaps in /etc) that invokes an interrogation.

Can anyone provide any clues here ?

Thanks,
Steven
