It did work on your previous router. The thing that has changed is the new router. So something must be different on that to the previous one that is causing issues with the PIs.
I'm not aware of any general issues like yours with NM on the PIs. NM is the norm on other linuxes and has been for ages. Personally, I came to PI from a non-PI linux background, so I always used to install NM on all my PIs anyway. Image may be NSFW.

A few general things to check; if you haven't already....
Is the router in the same physical condition as the previous one?
Have you tried changing channels on the router? It could be that the default channel is congested.
Are you using the internal WiFi adapters on the PIs? If so; what kind of cases have you got: Metal ones can be an issue for wireless comms.
Does it make any difference if you move the PI nearer or further away from the router?
One of the other posters on Here; Thagrol has produced an excellent summary of the differences between BW and BE on PI. Might be worth a look at. He has covered networking.
