I've been through all the changes one by one, and I think I've identified the line that breaks xrdp.

If you are updated and xrdp is not working, then:

sudo sed -i 's#exec systemd-inhibit --what=handle-power-key /usr/bin/lxsession -s LXDE-pi -e LXDE#exec /usr/bin/lxsession -s LXDE-pi -e LXDE#g' /usr/bin/startlxde-pi

and try connecting.

Sincere thank you for your patience and knowledge to identify the ‘tripwire’.

One of the puzzles has always been that shutting down the pi using that option when using xrdp to remote in never actually powered the pi down, unlike doing the same with VNC.

I cannot profess to fully understand the change that your suggestion makes, but that is because I freely accept that I do not have the depth and knowledge of Linux and how thing fully function.
