Troubleshooting • Pi 5 USB and HDMI switching off - possible heat issue

Hi,

I have a Pi 5 that is the heart of Yacht Racing Instrument display. It runs fine for a few hours and then the screen goes blank and the mouse and keyboard stop working.

Note: this is a test/development version of the system: there woud be no mouse or keboard on an instrument display mounted on the mast.

The display uses a Waveshare CAN HAT and and WD 240GB SATA SSD (max 2800 mW): there no other attached devices except for the powered USB hub on the test system. The screen has a 12V supply external to the Pi 5 and a HDMI input from the Pi 5.

The whole display - Pi, High-viz screen etc. - is housed in a watertight (and hence airtight) enclosure. It is cooled by convection and conduction through the aluminium back plate of the enclosure.

The Pi CPU itself is hot but by no means overheating: reaching about 50C when the room temperature is 20C and the air inside the enclosure is around 35C. I will run more tests and confirm these numbers.

I think that some other component is getting too hot and shutting itself down; then works fine again once it has cooled down. The mouse and keyboard are connected via the externally powereed USB hub.

Can anybody confirm or deny that this is what is happening, and what additional cooling I might put in place.

Thanks

Peter
