Troubleshooting • Latest apt updates seem to have killed my serial ports

Running 64 bit Bookworm on a 3B. The main purpose of the Pi is to run a number of Python services which are involved in managing a household heating control and energy monitoring system. These include weewx (5.1), which is connected to a Davis Vantage Pro weather station via a Meteo-Pi serial interface. This has been working fine for months. I last updated the system (using apt update/apt full-upgrade) about 10 days ago. I ran apt update/apt full-upgrade in the normal way today, and other than it creating about six versions of the weird boot/initramfs files whose creation seems to take forever during most apt upgrades, everything seemed to proceed normally. On rebooting, however, I noticed that the SD activity light stayed a solid green for almost a minute before reverting to its normal flickering (this may or may not be relevant, but was quite striking), and weewx immediately failed, reporting that it could not find the weather station's serial port. Checking the /dev directory confirms the absence of any /dev/serial.. entries. I did confirm that the serial port was enabled and not directed to the console in raspi-config. Where to start trouble-shooting this?

Edit: I thought I might have been exaggerating the time for which the activity light stayed solid green and also thought I should try actually powering down the Pi, so I shut it down, disconnected the power for 15 seconds, and then powered it up again. I wasn't exaggerating! The activity light actually stayed green for a full two minutes before 'normal service was resumed'. Powering down and restarting also did not restore the serial ports.
