Troubleshooting • Issues upgrading and installing software

Hi all,
i'm using a Pi 4 with the standard OS 64 bit. I have the official power supply and am using a wired ethernet connection.
I have been having some serious issues updating and upgrading my Pi. I have a new install on the SD card using the Raspberry Pi imagery on a separate laptop. When i started the Pi up i did a

Code:

sudo apt-get updatesudo apt-get upgrade
However, after a while i got a message saying

Code:

Looking for font path..
And it was just hanging for ages.
I found this thread viewtopic.php?p=2305092#p2305092 which covers the same issue, as i'm having. got round the initial issue with uninstalling realvnc-vnc-server, doing the update/upgrade and then attempting to reinstall realvnc-vnc-server again using

Code:

sudo apt-get install realvnc-vnc-server
Only to get the same message as i had previously.

Code:

Looking for font path..
After killing the process, i've tried to install some random software to see what happened, with exactly the same result.
So, at the moment, i can't reliably upgrade my Pi or indeed even install any software. I've tried reflashing the SD card multiple times, all with the same results.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what is happening here?
Thank you
