Troubleshooting • Rebooting with USB SSD, but not the usual reason?

I have a pi 4b, standard raspberry pi os, no desktop, running pihole, tailscale and jellyfin.
Worked fine for maybe a year, but then started having problems, crashing and not coming back up, usually once a day in the evenings, but was fine with the USB SSD disconnected.

The SSD is a little nvme usb 3 thing so shouldn't use as much power as a 2.5" in a caddy.

Found out about the power supply issues so bought a new genuine rpi power supply and ugreen powered hub that is meant to not backfeed the 5v rail. Same problem.
Tried wiring a 5v supply directly into the SSD cable, with power severed from the pi entirely, same problem.
Tried different cables, same problem.

Eventually I got a mini HDMI cable and plugged it in after a crash/reboot and was surprised to see it was at the login screen. I was expecting to see something like a kernel panic or something about dev/sda1 failure or something, because while in this state pihole isn't running and so my network is down, but I thought that should all run without being logged in right? Anyway, I logged in and it all came back up, so I enabled auto login and it seems to be coming back online now, but I am concerned that it will just be masking the issue by rebooting on repeated crashes.

I am not good with Linux at all, just working it out as I go, so any help with what I should do, logging etc is greatly appreciated.

I've also ordered a new sd card to clone to incase that's the issue.
