I have gotten some more info. Something was wrong with my original USB->SSD adapter setup. I installed the SSD in the adapter again and connected it to my antique USB port on my computer and it worked. I was able to burn the Home Assistant OS. However, I still can't boot from the SSD. I installed it in the Argon NEO 5 case again. I have modified the config.txt and rpi-eeprom-config. When I removed the SD card and booted, the boot failed. The boot process did search for a bootable OS on the PCIe bus. I also saw something about 'pci link down' in the boot display. Can't get much more info than that because the message display is so quick. The command 'lspci' does not show the SSD. I suspect that something in my SSD hardware setup isn't right. The Argon Neo5 case had 2 flex cables, one marked 'v 1.3' and the other 'v 2.0'. The documentation doesn't say which to use. There is quite a bit of discussion on this subject on the Argon site, but no clarification from Argon. I am currently using the 1.3 cable which most people say works better. Also, the Argon installation instructions say that the copper side of the strip (flex cable) should be facing the white side of the PCIE connector. The problem is that the entire connector is white! I tried to line it up based on the pictures. So I will continue to play with cables until it works. I now believe that is the source of my problem.
