Just a quick note to possibly help people finding this thread through Google. I found what is likely to be the same problem with my Canon TS9550 (on Raspios Bookworm) and dug into it a bit. It appears to have last worked correctly with CUPS 2.2.10-6+deb10u10 (cups-filters 1.21.6-5+deb10u1) on Debian Buster, then was broken with CUPS 2.3.3op2-3+deb11u9 (cups-filters 1.28.7-1+deb11u3) on Bullseye, and remains broken on Trixie (Debian testing, at the time of writing; CUPS 2.4.10-2+b1 / cups-filters 1.28.17-5+b2). It seems to be a problem specific to "driverless" / "everywhere" mode on CUPS, as installing Canon's cnijfilter2-6.80-1-deb.tar.gz package and using their driver seems to fix it. I believe that duplex operation is probably broken for most/all printers in "driverless" mode. This is an upstream problem in Debian, not specific to Raspberry Pi OS, and likely a bug in CUPS itself (probably in the cups-filters package). I can't be 100% certain that I encountered the same bug that started this thread, it just seems likely.
