Troubleshooting • Pi 5 intermittent 8 blink codes with Canakit 45W adaptors

I have four Pi 5's ordered from Canakit at two different times. The kit comes with their 45 W adapter. On power-up and reboot, I occasionally get the 8 short blink codes (sometimes blinking green, sometimes blinking yellow/red (or is it green/red and it looks like yellow)). I hold down the power button until it stops and power up again, and it usually works. Once it works, I have no problems. I'm running ZFS on all four machines, and that does checksums, and it is not reporting errors. No crashes, etc. So the SDRAM appears to be working fine. I run them for days.

I have usb_max_current_enable=1 set on all four, but I doubt this matters since I doubt it is reading the card.

The Canakit 45 W adapter, and the SD card that comes with the kit, are the only other components. I have a USB hard drive and a PWM fan (again, Canakit) on all four, but all four demonstrated the problem before I attached the hard drive, and the first one I got had the problem before I attached the fan. Two are in a different city than the other two. So, my belief is that it is likely either the Pi itself is having this problem or the power supply is causing it somehow. Seems more likely the power supply.

I don't see much mention if this in my google search. Seems very odd to me that there is so little on it given it is happening with all four of my pi's.

Anyone know anything?

Steve
