Upgrading in place is not usually (never?) recommended. So does the Pi Zero W work if you write Raspberry Pi OS LITE (32-bit) onto a spare microSD card using Raspberry Pi Imager, with its OS Customisation settings set to use your WiFI SSID and password, and enable SSH etc. ?
