Kip_the_elder and terribleted - thank you for your advice. I will not bother using the Raspberry Pi for what I want to do, since I can't, and try Linux Mint instead.
I don't think that will change things much. Standard tools for Mint are almost identical to what is available on a Raspberry Pi; LibreOffice, Gimp, Inkscape, Blender etc
