I just attempted to install a brand new M.2 Hat+, with brand new 256GB Raspberry Pi SSD, on my year-old Raspberry Pi 5. Unfortunately on first power up the power LED came on for about a second, then went out and I haven't been able to get any sign of life out of the Pi since. After this happened, I carefully removed the Hat and tried again, with no luck. I just tried again now and can confirm that the unit appears to be well and truly dead. I don't have another Pi 5 to try it with, though wouldn't want to do so in any case for fear it would fry that one too. So I have no idea if the hat or the SSD are OK and it's just the Pi that fried. I was using it with an official Raspberry Pi power supply, and both it and the Pi 5 were working just fine right before installing the new HAT (I did remove power before installing!). The power supply continues to work just fine on an older raspberry pi 4, but the Pi 5 seems completely dead.

I followed the directions carefully, including updating the firmware on my pi, which went fine and the unit successfully booted afterward (before installing the Hat). I was very careful to install everything exactly as instructed, no loose connections and no chance that I could have shorted something out.

Are there any steps you can recommend to try and ressurect the Pi, or to further troubleshoot the Hat to see if it's faulty?
