Troubleshooting • AndroidTV no audio, "signal is dvi connection"

Rpi5 going into a Sanyo yr 2010 TV, running konstakang lineage/androidTV on it. The full message I get when it gets to splash screen is:
"Signal is DVI connection. Please use HDMI1 and Audio 3 inputs for this av signal."

No audio output, as expected from the message.
Interestingly, I have a rpi3b+ running libreelec that works great on this TV. However, when I tried updating it to a newer libreelec version, it would either get no display/audio (first time tried updating) or that same message listed above, with no audio output (2nd attempt at updating).

Using an official rpi microhdmi cable for the pi 5. I tried using hdmi_group=1 into the confix.txt. The TV resolution is set at 1024x768 in the resolution.txt file.
During install of this system I had to go into recovery TWRP, but it never displayed on my TV; had to hook it to a monitor to finish that part.

My guess is rpi5 is stuck on DMT mode but the hdmi_group=1 (have also added in hdmi_mode=4 after) in config isn't working.
