When it comes to Samba, it isn't 'latest and greatest', it is 'latest and better'.
I think to fix your system, you are going to have to start again and as your problem was probably caused by an update, you may run into the same problem again if you start from the same base. There is also the problem that if this is a bug, you have less than a zero chance of getting it fixed, both Samba 4.9.x and Debian buster are dead.
Please believe me, upgrading to the latest Raspberry pi OS and using Samba from backports is your best option, if you still have the problem (which I doubt you will), you stand a good chance of getting it fixed.
