"Input/output error" means there was problem accessing a storage device. When that happens you should open a terminal and run dmesg to check the kernel logs for details.
However, you may find that you cannot start new programs if the drive is unresponsive. In that case you would need to have started dmesg --follow running before the problem occured. Or use a serial console.
Looking up entries in the passwd database is something that happens all the time and would have needed to be working when you booted or logged in. Nothing that you do in Python should be able to break it. But it may be that the servo motor browns out the power supply when it moves suddenly.
