Plastic case for bothAre either of the two devices in metal cases? They can weaken the signal massively and may make it completely unusable. If that's the case. Remove the case(s) and try again
Nothing that hinders other wifi connections, from other devices to the AP, from the Zero to another AP, which all work flawlessly. Is there any wireless interference? e.g bluetooth, baby monitors, Wireless HIDs. If so...turn off/move them away.
No, already tried several channelsIs the Wifi Channel that you are using congested? Try changing the channel.
NoAre there any obstructions between the devices...e.g walls/fish tanks (Radio signals don't travel well through water)
Well, I said up to 20 m, as it should be the worst case. Direct line of sight guaranteed since it's for a slideshow in e.g. an auditorium, the presenter standing just below the screen. During my tests, the devices are sometimes 20 cm apart.20m is quite a long way for WiFi to operate. IIRC, the rated distance is something like 35m...But my own experience is that in practice; that's often rather optimistic. Does the problem go away moving the devices closer together?
