In the meantime I was able to resolve the problem .
After some read-up on the web I followed these steps:
1. inserted the SD card from the pi into my Linux box
2. created a file 'ssh' in the boot directory of the sd card
3: transferred the SD card back to the pi
4. connected via ssh from my Linux box to the pi and voila, it was working.
I guess that's the easiest way to resolve this kind of problem.
Thank you for your attention.
