Problem: After upgrading to a Pi5 running NetworkManager on Bookworm, ESP8266 devices work but all ESP32 modules just refuse to connect, despite working well previously.
The history:
For a year I have been using a Pi 3B+ running as an AP, where the in-built Wi-Fi acts as a local service [WLAN0] and a USB Wi-Fi dongle [WLAN1] connects to the outside World, when required.
The external service is only for sending occasional status emails and infrequent RealVNC access when connected to the local marina Wi-Fi.
The s/w is a Node-Red/Mosquitto-based boat systems monitor, being fed with several ESP32/8266 modules talking to it on WLAN0 and the NR Dashboard is accessed by a tablet on the same network. This has worked beautifully but it really needed a faster processor so I upgraded to a Pi5 [8GB].
Remembering the trauma of manually setting up the 3B+ as an AP, I was delighted to discover that Bookworm has an inbuilt option. However, upon completion of the new setup, I discovered that none of the established ESP32 devices will ever connect to WLAN0 yet ESP8266 modules will.
I can confirm that everything is working on 2.4GHz.
My desire is to retain compatibility with the 3B+ so my preference is to resolve the difficulty that the Bookworm AP is having.
Any guidance or pointing in the right direction will be most welcome!
