Troubleshooting • Re: Fan and USB wont shut down after shutdown / booting

I wasn't sure if I should create a new thread or resurrect this one, but figured to post here since there is no resolution and this is the only thread I found which seems to describe the 100% exact same problem I have been experiencing the last few days.

Some background info about how the fan problems started for me:

I purchased my rpi5 in July and have been running as a Kodi box using LibreElec on a 64GB SD Card for months without issue. I typically use the device on a daily basis to watch a show or movie in the evening after work. I cannot think of anything that was out of the ordinary that might have happened, but a few days ago on Oct 8 I booted up my rpi and quickly realized something was wrong because the audio was no longer working when navigating the menu options and the screen seemed squashed or shifted, like the buttons weren't square anymore. I tried various things like changing the video and audio options but couldn't seem to fix anything. I tried various music files, youtube videos and other video files from internet and local network and either things would play for a few seconds without audio and freeze/stop or wouldn't play at all. I ended up pulling out my rpi4 to watch a show that night and figured I would look into it again later. I'm not 100% sure if this has anything to do with the fan issues but I am mentioning it because it was the catalyst to the fan problems I seem to be having now. I still never figured out what happened with that LibreElec install, it's very strange how it seemingly got corrupt like that for no reason.

My rpi5 kit came with a m.2 HAT adapter that was actually all plugged in and connected to the rpi5 board already but I didn't have an m.2 drive plugged in. So the next day, I figured I should pick up a small m.2 drive and give that a shot just in case the sd card or sd card reader somehow stopped working properly and I figured m.2 would be better/faster and meant to try it at some point anyway. It took a bit of fiddling to get everything installed on the new m.2 drive. I ended up installing Pi OS on a usb stick, booted into that and installed the newest LibreElec to m.2. drive from there and changed the boot sequence using raspi-config to boot from NVMe first.

After that I was able to plug in my old sd card and pulled over all the addons and settings and it seemed all was working again even faster with the new drive. Audio and network were working great, everything seemed to be fine until later after shutting down the rpi5 I noticed that the fan was still spinning hours later even though the device was supposedly off (red light on the device).

I ended up spending many hours with chatgpt to try and resolve this but so far the problem remains. Like the original poster, I modified POWER_OFF_ON_HALT=0 to POWER_OFF_ON_HALT=1 thinking that would help but it made no difference. Chatgpt had me try all kinds of wacky things like trying to create a shutdown script that would set the fan speed to 0 and/or unbinding the fan so that it cannot be receive any further cmds to spin up again. Those scripts technically worked to stop the fan while the shutdown sequence was running, but as soon as the device flipped from green light to red light, the fan spins up to top speed and never stops until I pull the power plug.

It seems that the original poster experienced this right from day 1 but in my case I was happily using my rpi5 for 3-4 months before this problem started. I loved the fact that the rpi5 could shut down like a normal computer and I didn't need to wait and flick an off switch like my rpi4 but now it seems I have to do a similar thing and pull the plug out after shutting down which is quite annoying, but not impossible to do.

At this point, I am not 100% sure if my problem started at the same time my SD card install of LibreElec crapped out or if it was after I started tinkering with the m.2. drive. But similar to the original poster, my fan is plugged securely with no bent pins. I was very careful to take it apart when I installed the m.2. drive and truth be told, everything works beautifully now except that the fan spins up to 100% on shutdown and doesn't stop until power plug is pulled.

In doing some troubleshooting, I removed the m.2 adapter and was mostly working on Pi OS on usb stick to run cmds and change bootloader settings, etc. I do not recall doing any update recently and everything I check now says everything like eepom version is up-to-date. The fact that original poster was having this issue back in april tells me that a new update probably wouldn't cause this, although at this point I am at a loss for what is going on and will continue using the device and just pulling the power plug when done.

If anyone has any thoughts or ideas, I am all ears although at this point I've spent too much time on this problem and mostly wanted to just put it out there that the original poster isn't the only one who is experiencing this issue.
