It can only see networks that are behind the firewall which is fine for most folks but I have to have pictures for my documents. I went to the IT folks and they are not budging because there is only one or two of us that need to access other networks. It seems silly to me, because it is just pictures of buildings and dirt mostly but it is something that I have been dealing with for the past 8 years and I just want a work around.
You're still not explaining very well. If you are using someone else's network and they won't let you do something then that's too bad. If you want to set up a Pi to circumvent their security then they will be mad when they find out. But, this is basically going to be a software function on the Pi so you should be able to configure the laptop to do the same thing.

I think what you are saying is that you have a NAS at "home", and you want to access it from "work", but you can't access things outside the "work" network.

Probably you should clone the NAS drive to a portable USB drive and bring it to "work". Now you can plug the USB drive into your laptop and see copies of all your files.
