The "display:" line from the diagnostics display shows why.I would love to know why cables that work fine on Pi 4's don't work on a Pi 5? I assumed that the only difference is in how well they are made.
If you are connected to hdmi you should see HPD=1. You should also see EDID=okay.
I suspect you will with the good cable.
The bad cable has likely not connected all the wires (and so is not hdmi compliant).
